Our greenhouse adventure

Buddy found the last patch of snow!

Lazy morning. Got a late start, but worked our way through M's assignments. Completed a fun art project. Hopefully he'll have another finished to turn in on Friday.

He left to pick up his lunch at 11:10. The van has been early for the past week or so. I mentioned it to one of the drivers, complained about it to the food manager, and reported it to the business manager. No joy. Oh well, only a week and a half left!

I decided to make another abstract artwork. Slightly different. Very relaxing to color, now I know why my coworker loves her coloring books!

After lunch, M drove me to the gift shop at the airport. I haven't been there in over a year. The owner is just the sweetest lady. Her starts were sold out, but I purchased a couple of plants for the rock bed, a geranium, and an African violet (for the windowsill). Spent $90. I asked her about the hedge around her house, and she said she'd give me a few starts. I want some bushes between us and the neighbors.

She also told me that her mother had passed away a few weeks ago. They were unable to visit her (she was in Seattle) even though she was dying. And because of The Virus, no funeral. Her husband is a pilot who used to fly cargo jets. Since The Virus he has been based out of Anchorage flying medevacs. She's hardly seen him. Sad. I want to do something for her, but what?

M did pretty well driving. He stalled out a few times and forgot to use his blinker but otherwise was very good. Hard to teach with a stick shift!

We stopped at our local store for a few items. $100+ later.... The mandatory mask ordinance went into effect at 12am on Tuesday. But the workers either weren't wearing masks or had them around their chins. Kinda ridiculous. I get not wanting to wear a mask for 8 hours while working. It's just so arbitrary. Especially as a sign on the door says, "No mask, no service."

Later, H, M and I ventured out to the greenhouse by the bay at the end of Squaw Creek Road.  I hadn't been there in years, mainly because I'd bring flower starts back with me from Anchorage. Well, I knew the road out was bad, but! We scraped bottom on the first bad frost heave. It was so bad that I got switched with H and let him drive.  Two more horrible sections to get through. I had to cover my eyes, it was so scary!

We bought 6-pack starts of cabbage, kale, pansy, daisy, and calendula. A single geranium, several pounds of seed potatoes, and a small 4-pack of impatiens. Another $100. The drive back was even worse because with the shading, we couldn't determine the best way to go through the humpy mud. Scraped bottom twice more. It'll be a few years before I venture there again.

We averaged about 2 mph.

I spent the rest of the afternoon working in the front yard. H used to have a fantastic garden, but over the years it's become overgrown. When my older sons were little, we spent most of the summer at home, and I had some beautiful raised beds of flowers. Now it's an unruly mess. I raked the front area, and decided that I'll transplant some rhubarb. First I need to build up the rock wall, then add some soil. I should also dig up the Siberian pea tree sprouts and plant them somewhere.

Nice to be outside working and tidying the yard. The mosquitoes will soon be out in force and then will be the time to work on my indoor projects!
