Vicious Dog Attack
How quickly things can go from peaceful and calm to shock and trauma. We have two beautiful dogs. They are brothers (litter mates) and really the sweetest dogs, although as different as chalk and cheese. They're getting old, and this morning we joked around that we should call them Bumpy and Lumpy, and I took some pictures of them and sent them to O. They're obviously spoiled, with two big comfy beds right in the middle of our living area.
Bumpy and Lumpy
Best friends
This evening after the zoom Book Club meeting, C and I went for a walk. It was about 8:30pm and a gorgeous evening. We took the dogs, and walked our usual route. Two-thirds of the way home we were ambushed by a 130 pound husky. He just leapt upon poor old Lumpy and started chewing on him. He dragged my dog away from me and yanked me over. C screamed at me to let go of the leash, but before I did, Lumpy's collar came off. The husky kept on chewing on my scared old dog. I screamed. C threw an old basketball and rocks at the dog. I kicked at it. It wouldn't stop biting and shacking Lumpy's neck and shoulder. Then it let go and started chewing and ripping at his victim's hind end. I was still screaming. Finally, and it seemed like an hour later but was probably minutes, two neighbors, a man and his teenage son, came running over. The man scared the husky off. Thank God! I don't know how much more trauma my dog could stand.
C told me to go tell the dog's owners. The husky is usually kept behind a fence. I was terrified to go through the gate, but a sweet girl (another neighbor) led me to the house and stayed with me. I told the owners. I was a wreck and probably didn't do a great job of expressing myself. Hopefully they'll do something. It wasn't the first time the dog has attacked passersby, and the adults did not seem surprised or defensive about the dog so they obviously know it's temperament. The teenage girl, however, was in denial and said it wasn't her dog and the fence was secure. But there was a large opening right at the driveway. So, um, nope.
H and the lads took our ravaged dog to a doctor who stitched him up in several places on his shoulder. I insisted that they check out his backside, and sure enough, he had about 5 or 6 puncture wounds on his thigh, tail and under his anus. Poor old thing! T was really good about trimming the hair away and washing the wounds.

While they were at the doctor's, I left a message for the animal control officer and also a message at the police station. While I appreciate the love people have for their pets, the dog had to be reported for his vicious, unprovoked attack on a dog who was on a leash.
